Meet Heather and Dave, one of our newest couples to join the All You Need Is Love Events family! We are so excited for the upcoming wedding at the beautiful Malibu Nature Preserve and know that their day will be breathtaking. This wedding is special for me because Heather and I went to high school together so it has been fun getting to catch up with a fellow MHS alum all the while helping her plan her dream day! We asked them to tell us about their story and their planning process. Introducing…Heather and Dave!

How did you two meet? {And They Say You Only Meet People in a Bar…May 8, 2004}
We met mulching. Unglamorous, we know. Rewind to 2004, San Francisco’s Portrero Hill neighborhood, where Dave and Heather’s companies are both participating in a city-wide volunteer day. Dave arrived with his team of consultant coworkers, and Heather sauntered up to the park minutes later with her PR agency teammates.
The morning started with moving one huge pile of mulch to all the places it was needed throughout the park. Dave took the lead organizing the effort and had a methodical process going for moving the mountain of mulch from Point A to Point B. Heather, ever efficient, approached and said “It would be easier if you did it this way.” After demonstrating her improvements she promptly went off to the next job. As the day wore on, the director of the park cleanup project asked Dave if he wanted a really boring project. Before he had a chance to say no, the director handed him a trowel and told him to go around the whole park and edge the sidewalks for weeds. Dave took the trowel and headed off to find that girl with the mulching ideas…
Fast forward a few hours, and with the park pristine and volunteering at end, Dave decided that he better invite Heather and her friends to the BBQ his company had planned for after the event. He’s psyched when they say they’ll come, but two hours into the BBQ there is still no sign of the girls. Just when he is giving up hope, Heather hops out of a cab with a friend and a six pack of Full Sail IPAs. After the park teamwork, a sunny afternoon on our friend’s deck, conversations about the best books we ever read, and a couple of Full Sails, we knew we’d found something special. Heather asked Dave out to dinner the next night. Five years later, Dave asked Heather to be his wife.

How did you two get engaged? Dave’s family has a house in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. Their family’s connection to the lake bears special significance: Dave’s Great Grandfather built the first house on the lake in the 1900s and presented it to his new wife as a honeymoon gift. The lake is pristine, morning swims followed by afternoon bike rides and sunset cocktail cruises are de rigueur … not a bad place to spend a few days! We try and make a trip there every summer and in 2009, summer was drawing to a close and no trip was on the calendar. Dave called up Heather one afternoon and said he has something planned for my birthday: a trip to the Adirondacks. We flew from Chicago to Dave’s parents home in Rochester, NY, stopping at the grocery store to pick up all of my favorite foods for a decadent birthday feast, and then completed the 3 hour drive to the lake. It was a big deal that we were able to go to the lake house without Dave’s parents with us – as its usually a family tradition for everyone to be there together – so Dave was especially judicious about unlocking the house, turning on the electricity, and insisted that we immediately walk to the end of the dock “to make sure the boat was okay.” Unknowingly partaking in what I understand to be a common trend whereby girlfriends nearly foil their engagements, I countered that there was no reason to go out there in the dark and we should just chill out and have a glass of wine. But, alas, Dave prevailed and out we went into the dark. As we stepped outside we were greeted by a full moon, a still lake, and the total silence you find only when you are miles away from everything. We reached the boat, which was – of course – fine, and Dave told me what a special place this lake was to him and to his family, and how he was so glad that it was something we enjoyed together. Before I realized what was going on, he was on one knee, holding a ring and asked me to marry him. We spent the next 5 days in the Adirondacks, by ourselves, celebrating together and letting it all sink in.

Where are you two planning on getting married? We are getting married at the Malibu Nature Preserve because it is so classic Malibu. It was important to me to get married in Malibu, and once we saw the views from the bluff, where our ceremony would take place, we were sold. Plus, we like that our venue fee is reinvested in the Malibu Nature Trust (the organization that owns the preserve and keeps Malibu looking beautiful).

Why did you decide to use All You Need Is Love Events as your planners? Shannon and I went to high school together and I kept an eye on All You Need is Love Events as she shared details on Facebook about partnering with lovely Vikki, choosing their name and launching their site. After seeing pictures from a few events and what inspired the duo, I knew we were really on the same page.
