We recently worked with Olivia at Sweet Catastrophe for a wedding. Her custom cakes are not only delicious, but unique, personal, imaginative and better yet- for a cause! Her spin on the classic cake is truly a work of art! Learn more about Sweet Catastrophe below for this week’s Feature Friday!
1. Tell us a little bit about you and what you do. I’ve always loved anything artistic and creative, every since I was a little kid. I have a degree in Fashion Design and had a career in that industry. After working in the corporate world for a few years, I realized that type of job just wasn’t for me. I started making custom cakes and cupcakes as a hands-on creative outlet from my technical job and ended up really loving it! I’ve been doing it now for about 4 years as a way to raise money for Food4Africa and contribute to their mission to feed kids living in poverty in South Africa. (I recently became Director of Food4Africa’s US division!) I make cakes for all occasions and am now specializing in vegan cakes/cupcakes. When I’m not making cakes, I am co-owner and designer of a little girls clothing line, magugu toto, and raising more funds for a preschool/nursery through F4A with my vegan recipe blog, the yummy year project.
2. How did you get interested/started in custom cakes? I always loved play-doh as a kid so I think I’ve come full circle now that I play with fondant! I decided to really pursue cake making during a trip to South Africa. I was hiking on Ubombo mountain and I thought, “I am going to come back to CA, make cakes and donate a portion of proceeds to help feed kids in South Africa.” And that’s what I set out to accomplish! The more I learned about cakes and what you can make with this medium, the more interested I got. I love that the possibilities are endless and the fact that you can eat it afterwards =)
3. What do you love most about your job? Definitely the reactions from clients and helping to make their event a special and memorable one! Nothing can describe the feeling I get from taking their ideas and making their vision tangible and delicious. It makes it all so worth it!
4. Advice to couples searching for a wedding cake? Find a custom cake designer that fits your personal style and taste (looking through websites before making appointments will definitely help narrow it down) or get a referral from a family/friends. If you aren’t sure about your cake design yet, provide photos of cakes you like, colors of your wedding, flowers, even your wedding dress– they can all help your decorator make the perfect cake for you. Be open to different ideas, you might be surprised what you end up really liking!
5. What inspires you? My clients! My goal is to make each client’s cake truly theirs. I am also inspired by nature, music, art, and fashion- feathers, song lyrics, a certain brush stroke, or an embroidery– they are all waiting to be translated into a custom cake!

1. Tell us a little bit about you and what you do with Sugar Cat Studio.
My name is Alison Riede, and I started Sugar Cat Studio about 2 years ago. I bake cupcakes for special events, but I also provide clients the opportunity to add a custom designed cupcake wrapper to give their cupcakes that wow factor. My cupcake wrappers have been shipped worldwide to countries such as France, England, and Australia, and I’ve created cupcakes and wrappers for weddings, birthdays and other special events. I even had the opportunity to create cupcake wrappers for the 2010 Academy Award gifting suites.
2. How did you get interested/started in handmade cupcake wrappers?
I started off as a Surface Pattern Design major at Syracuse University, where I fell in love with colors and patterns. I’ve always loved baking, so Sugar Cat Studio is a blend of two of my passions, baking and art. Cupcakes are so absolutely adorable on their own, but if you add a beautifully colored wrapper, it takes the cupcake to a whole new level of chic and sophistication.
3. What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about creating cupcake wrappers is making someone’s special day that much more unique and different. I love seeing photos after a wedding or other special event of the cupcake wrappers, and admiring how they add to the beauty of the event.
4. What has been your favorite project for a wedding?
My favorite project for a wedding would have to be the cupcakes and wrappers I’m working on now for a wedding one of my close friends, Stacey. We’ve been getting together every few weeks to go over colors and patterns, and she chose a gorgeous color scheme for her cupcake wrappers with pretty lace embellishments. The best part will be going to the wedding and seeing firsthand how beautiful the cupcakes look!
5. What inspires you?
If you could only understand our intense love of smores and cupcakes, you would see how this is literally our perfect dessert.
